The Visitor Centre explains how St. Kevin founded this settle-ment at a time when Christianity was burgeoning throughout Ireland. DINNER & OVERNIGHT: TRIDENT HOTEL, KINSALE TUE, OCT 25—KINSALE WALKING TOUR, CHARLES FORT & BLARNEY This morning embark on a brief walking tour with a local guide to learn the history of the town. Kinsale traces its origins back to 1177 when the Anglo-Normans founded a town in a small walled area close to the water. It grew as a port town during the 18th century and today the harbor is favored by yacht owners. Stop to visit Charles Fort, which was constructed in the late 17th century on the site of an earlier coastal fortification. Travel north into County Cork to Blarney and climb to the battlements of Blarney Castle to kiss the famous "Stone of eloquence." Then travel through Kenmare, where traditional buildings are gaily painted and enhanced with flowers, and on to Moll’s Gap for views of Killarney, its three lakes and mountains. Stop in the town of Dingle before continuing to the western tip of the peninsula. Here the scenery becomes wilder as the influence of the open Atlantic Ocean strength-ens. You will pass early Christian monastic beehive huts and small fishing villages. Along the route stop to visit Brian de Staic, a prestigious jewelry company, which is exclusively dedicated to creating pieces with style. Also visit Louis Mulcahy Pottery, which specializes in huge earthenware jars with brilliant blue glazes. Drive inland to the lovely town of Ennis where your hotel is located. Enjoy some leisure time before dinner. There are many reasons that we go to Ireland in October.
October is off season and therefore cheaper. Because it is the off season we generally are the only bus at all the main attractions so there is no waiting in line we get in and get out and of to our next adventure.
We can also get checked into our hotels easier and hassle free. We can set our dinner time and don't have to work around other groups.
You do not go to Ireland for the weather. Ireland does not get a guaranteed summer like the Sates does. In other words the weather in October could be exactly like the weather in June. I love the Irish saying that "It's a great day for a high stool".
The changing of the leaves is just beautiful at that time of year and makes for great pictures.
